Why a Bicycle or Electric Bike May Be the Best Investment You Can Make in Your Health and Longevity

People spend enormous amounts of money trying to become healthier.

Gym memberships. Exercise equipment. Supplements. Personal trainers. Weight-loss programs. Fitness apps.

But one of the most effective tools for improving your health may also be something that gets you to work, takes you to the beach, lets you run errands, gets you outside, and happens to be a lot of fun:

A bicycle, or an electric bike.

That is not simply a bicycle retailer telling you that riding is healthy. There is substantial scientific evidence connecting regular physical activity and cycling with better cardiovascular health, improved fitness, healthier aging and a lower risk of premature death.

And electric bikes may solve one of the biggest problems with traditional exercise programs:

People actually have to keep doing them for them to work.

An e-bike can make riding practical enough, comfortable enough and enjoyable enough that exercise becomes part of everyday life rather than another appointment on your calendar.

That can make a bicycle or electric bike one of the best long-term investments you can make, not just in transportation, but in your health, independence and longevity.

  1. Cycling Is Associated With a Longer Life

Perhaps the most important question is also the simplest:

Do people who cycle actually live longer?

Large-scale research suggests that regular cycling is associated with a significantly lower risk of premature death.

A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis examined data involving nearly 479,000 participants. Researchers found that people in the highest cycling category had a 23% lower risk of death from all causes compared with those in the lowest cycling category. Cardiovascular mortality was approximately 24% lower. The study also found that every additional five MET-hours per week of cycling was associated with a further reduction in all-cause mortality risk.

Another meta-analysis examining active commuting found that cycling to work was associated with a 21% reduction in all-cause mortality and a 33% reduction in cardiovascular mortality.

These are observational data, so they do not prove that buying a bicycle by itself makes someone live longer. People who cycle may differ from non-cyclists in other ways.

But the overall evidence is remarkably consistent with what we already know about physical activity: people who stay physically active generally live longer and experience less chronic disease.

The CDC states that physically active people generally live longer and face lower risks of serious health conditions including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and certain cancers.

That makes regular cycling much more than recreation.

It can be part of a long-term longevity strategy.

  1. Your Heart Was Designed to Work and Cycling Makes It Work

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the world’s largest causes of death.

Cycling provides sustained aerobic exercise, requiring the heart to pump blood to large muscle groups repeatedly over an extended period.

Over time, regular aerobic activity can contribute to:

  • Better cardiorespiratory fitness
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Healthier cholesterol levels
  • Improved circulation
  • Better blood-sugar regulation
  • Reduced cardiovascular disease risk

A systematic review and meta-analysis involving more than one million people found cycling was associated with significantly lower cardiovascular disease incidence, cardiovascular mortality and cardiovascular risk factors.

In another major study published in The BMJ, researchers followed more than 263,000 people. Compared with non-active commuting, cycling to work was associated with substantially lower risks of cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular death, cancer and all-cause mortality.

The CDC likewise reports that getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke and can help reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels.

And that brings us to an important question.

  1. Does Riding an Electric Bike Really Count as Exercise?

Yes.

One of the biggest misconceptions about electric bicycles is that the motor does all the work.

On a pedal-assist e-bike, you are still pedaling. The motor supplements your effort rather than eliminating it.

Researchers have repeatedly measured heart rate, oxygen consumption and exercise intensity while people ride electric bicycles.

A systematic review of e-bike research found moderate evidence that electric cycling typically provides physical activity of at least moderate intensity. Researchers also found evidence that e-cycling can improve cardiorespiratory fitness in previously inactive people.

Even more importantly, a major systematic review published in 2026 analyzed 31 studies involving 11,890 participants.

The researchers concluded that although e-bike riding generally requires less physiological effort than conventional cycling, it commonly still reaches at least moderate exercise intensity. E-bike use was also associated with greater overall physical activity and less sedentary time compared with no-exercise conditions.

So when someone says:

“An electric bike is cheating.”

Our response is simple:

Cheating at what?

If the goal is to become more active, improve fitness, spend more time outside and replace sedentary car trips with movement, an electric bike can be an extremely effective tool.

  1. The Best Exercise Is Often the Exercise You Will Actually Do

This is where an electric bike may have an enormous real-world advantage.

A traditional bicycle might provide more exercise per mile.

But what if you only ride it five miles?

An e-bike might allow you to comfortably ride 10, 15 or 25 miles.

Research involving more than 10,000 participants in seven European cities found that e-bike users traveled significantly farther than conventional cyclists. Overall physical-activity levels from active travel were similar between e-bike users and conventional cyclists, in part because e-bike riders traveled greater distances.

This is one of the most important concepts in exercise:

Intensity matters—but consistency matters too.

The perfect workout that you rarely perform is less useful than sustainable physical activity that becomes part of your life.

Electric assistance can eliminate many reasons people stop riding:

“The hills are too difficult.”

Use more assistance.

“I don’t want to arrive at work exhausted.”

Let the motor help.

“I can’t keep up with my spouse.”

Choose your assistance level.

“I haven’t exercised in years.”

Start gradually.

“That destination is too far away on a regular bike.”

An e-bike can make it realistic.

Instead of designing your life around exercise, an electric bike can allow you to build exercise into your life.

  1. An E-Bike Can Turn Transportation Time Into Exercise Time

One of the biggest obstacles to fitness is supposedly a lack of time.

But many people already spend considerable time every day sitting in a car.

The 2019 meta-analysis involving more than one million participants found cycling associated with approximately 16% lower cardiovascular disease incidence and 17% lower cardiovascular mortality in the pooled analyses.

For someone currently spending most of the day sitting, replacing some sedentary transportation with cycling can therefore represent a meaningful lifestyle change.

  1. Cycling Can Support Blood-Sugar Control and Metabolic Health

Physical activity helps your muscles use glucose and improves the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar.

The CDC identifies regular physical activity as an important tool for reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and managing blood sugar in people who already have diabetes.

An electric bike can be especially valuable here because it allows riders to control the intensity.

You don’t have to begin with an exhausting workout.

You can start with higher motor assistance, shorter rides and flatter routes, then gradually increase your distance or reduce assistance as your fitness improves.

And that last point matters.

An electric bike is a powerful health tool, not a magic machine.

The more regularly you use it, the greater its potential value.

Running is excellent exercise, but repeated impact can be difficult for some people.

Cycling is a comparatively low-impact activity because much of your body weight is supported by the bicycle.

An eight-week study involving older adults compared conventional cyclists, e-bike riders and a non-cycling control group. Both cycling groups improved measures of executive function, while the e-bike participants also showed improvements in processing speed and mental-health scores compared with the non-cycling controls.

A broader 2026 review of 87 bicycling-intervention studies found evidence of benefits across areas including mood, depressive symptoms, social connection and cognitive functioning, although results varied by population and type of intervention.

The bicycle therefore exercises more than your legs.

  1. Riding Outside Gives Exercise a Purpose

People often quit exercise because exercise for its own sake becomes repetitive.

Thirty minutes staring at the wall from a treadmill can feel very different from 30 minutes riding along the coast.

The researchers emphasized an important distinction: replacing conventional cycling mile-for-mile with maximum electric assistance would reduce the exercise stimulus, but e-biking can still provide meaningful physical activity.

That’s exactly the point.

If your alternative is riding a conventional bicycle, harder cycling may produce a greater workout over the same distance.

But if your realistic alternative is driving a car or sitting at home, riding an e-bike can represent a dramatic increase in physical activity.

  1. You Don’t Need to Become an Athlete

The World Health Organization recommends that adults generally accumulate 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent combination.

That sounds much less intimidating when divided into bike rides.

For example:

30 minutes × 5 days = 150 minutes per week

A 30-minute e-bike commute in each direction several days a week can accumulate substantial activity without requiring a separate trip to a gym.

You don’t need racing shoes.

No bicycle company should tell you that buying a bike guarantees that you will live longer or prevents disease.

Medicine doesn’t work that way.

Genetics, nutrition, smoking, alcohol, sleep, medical care, environment and many other factors affect health and longevity.

But decades of research tell us something very clearly:

Regular physical activity is one of the most powerful modifiable behaviors associated with better long-term health.

The CDC describes physical activity as one of the best things people can do for their health and states that physically active people generally live longer.

Cycling gives you a practical way to put that science into action.

And electric bikes make cycling accessible to a much wider range of people.

That may be the real revolution created by the e-bike.

The electric motor isn’t replacing the human body.

It is helping more human bodies keep moving.
